Have you ever had a nickname you didn’t choose… but it chose you?
I didn’t come up with “Triple B.” Honestly, at the beginning, I didn’t even like it.
My dad gave me the nickname: Triple B — Benny the Beast Benavides.
“Benny” comes from my last name, Benavides. It’s just a shortened version of it. And the “Beast” part is what my dad says when I’m running the bases or just going to work on the field — like I’m a beast in baseball.
Truth be told, I’ve never been the type of person who loves the limelight. I don’t really like being recognized, and I don’t chase accolades. I just want to play the game. I love the game, and that’s what I want to focus on.
But here’s how it became real: my friends got wind of the nickname, and they started calling me Triple B too. Once that happened, it stuck.
Over time, I realized something — even if I didn’t choose the name, I can choose what it stands for.
To me, “Triple B” isn’t about hype. It’s a reminder:
- Stay Humble
- Keep Working
- Let the work speak
- Be the best teammate and the best person I can be on the field
Maybe one day people really will know me by it, like my dad says. But if they do, I hope what they see isn’t just a nickname.
I hope they see someone who loves baseball, respects the game, and keeps his head down — grateful for every chance to compete.
Question for you: Have you ever had a nickname you didn’t choose… but it chose you?
